Dammit, this wasn’t supposed to happen. I was doing so well there for a little while, and now I
just went nearly three weeks without an update. Whatever.
So what happened…
Not much I guess,
which is probably why I didn’t write, whatever. A few things of note though:
1. Dirt Road Worlds, 2. WBLs, 3. Cruise, and 4. Wes.
1. Dirt Road Worlds
went pretty crappy for me. I had some problems and then pulled off a terrific
crash – it felt as if god picked me up by the throat, lifted me about 4 feet
off the ground, and then slammed me down hard-like at 25mph. It was wild.
I was all by myself…off
the back…and I fell. Ouch.
But hey, as I was
falling, I thought about the little piece of paper pinned to my wall which came
with my newly minted health insurance: “Hey look—–you’ve got health
insurance!”
And I crumpled
to the ground with a sense of peace.
2. I’ve done a
couple of WBLs in recent weeks and that has been good fun. Three weeks ago we
had a great group from our team come on down: Pat, Stoop, Andy, Adam, and I.
It was great fun. We took something like 3rd 4th an 5th in the attack zone,
so it wasn’t anything spectacular except for Andy king kongin people left and
right. Someday I’ll ride like Andy.
This Saturday was
Toccoa and by the end of the day it was pretty close to one of my longest days
on a bike ever at 130 miles.
Andy came down
again to join Adam and I…and it was awesome. It’s a wild feeling to be 60+
miles into a ride and stop at a store and realize you might not even be halfway.
I sucked it up
bad in the attack zone, but Andy and Adam were good again. In some ways these
little end of the ride zones are already helping me for the season, since I’m
already making some absolutely dumb errors that I’d rather make here in practice
than in any kind of race.
Case in point:
at some moment on Saturday we had three in a group of eight once Adam made it
across. He looked at me and made some kind of tomahawk chop movement which I
interpreted as attack. I looked around, nah, I ain’t attackin, hey Andy, ATTACK!
So Andy attacked. haha, sucker. Anyway, the misinterpretation was somewhat important
in that he just meant to drive it, not attack. Yeah, so that was me being mildly
dumb…to say the least.
3. The weekend
before I got to go on a cruise with Jamila down to the Bahamas. I swear, that
was some fun. It was only a four-day break from training but it felt like years
and it was fantastic. I ate my body weight in soft serve ice cream for sure,
and probably pulled down a year’s supply of fruit. I figure, in situations like
that, go for what you normally can’t get: fruit, meat, and soft-serve ice cream.
I tried to get
my first ever tan and actually laid myself out in the attempt, but even with
multiple applications of 45 spf sunscreen, I came back baked. Woe to me.
4. And now I’m
home again, and I finally get to meet the infamous Wes Seigler. I’ve heard Wes
stories from Jacob ever since I started hanging out with Jacob back in 05, and
I’m just about as happy as can be just to have the privilege to BE here to see
the two of em go at it. It’s hysterical. I know I laugh a lot, but if it’s in
anyway possible, I’ve laughed more in one day than I’ve managed in a month I
think.
In non-laughing
news, Wes is traveling around doing the legwork to push his bikes – Seigler.
They’re some pretty impressive machines. I would love to ride one someday. Check
em out HERE.
