Bikin Bikin School School Tour Tour Rain
Monday, July 6th, 2009I feel like that pretty much sums up our time right now. We’re both doing a fair bit of biking, I’m doing a fair bit of Tour covering, and Ashley is making up for her lack of Tour work with schoolwork, so it works out perfectly, oh and of course, there’s always rain to enjoy.
Ashley just started her UNO Summer School classes today. It should be quite the adventure in discipline for the both of us for the next six weeks. She has class Monday thru Thursday from 8 to noon. I don’t think we’ve been out of bed before 9 more than ten times this year. I guess we’ll have to learn to wake up like normal people at some point again, might as well be now. It sounds like her classes will be ok, but she’ll be busy busy with school – those three classes everyday plus her online political science class.
Funny thing happened today while we were having lunch at the Mensa – one of my old, favorite German professors walked by, Dr. Inge DiBella. Dr. DiBella was really a great professor to me. I still think of her as one of my favorite teachers of all time. I haven’t seen her since 2005, but as we were sitting there munching on a giant wiener schnitzel for lunch today, she walked on by. The look of surprise on her face was priceless. We had a nice conversation. She even said some nice things about me to Ashley. Too sweet. Ha.
We raced yesterday in Wattens. We had previewed what we thought would be Sunday’s race on Saturday, but I had the climb wrong. This was probably a good thing, because Ashley wouldn’t have done the race had she ridden the correct climb on Saturday. It was HARD. 6k at 12.1%. It tickled. I didn’t go very fast, but it’s a step in the right direction. I was SEVEN minutes back of the winner. I did 33 minutes, the winner did it in 26 I think. I averaged 350 watts to get drilled that badly. Oh well. I’ll be needing to do more then that I guess.
Ashley did well for her first ever race. She made it up the damn thing. It was really an evil climb. I’m proud of her for not quitting. I wanted to quit.
Hopefully she’ll be doing some more typical racing soon enough – as in, when we get back to the States. She’s looking forward to it. So am I.
That’s all for now. We’re going to try and do a little recovery ride in between rain showers soon. Then it’s back to Tour work. Yahoo, only 19 stages to go.
